Introduction
Virtual power plants are aggregating rooftop solar, EVs, and home batteries into flexible grid assets, without building a single new plant. Traditionally, the only way to guard against blackouts and skyrocketing bills was to fire up another gas plant to boost supply. Over the past decades power grids have undergone a transformation towards smaller and more intermittent generators – primarily in the form of wind and solar generators – as well as smaller grid-connected batteries. The shift from conventional energy sources like coal and gas to variable renewable alternatives such as solar and wind means the decades-old way we operate the energy system is changing.
