PV systems are increasing in size and the fraction of the load that they carry, often in response to federal requirements and goals set by legislation and Executive Order (EO 14057). High penetration of PV challenges integration into the utility grid; batteries could alleviate this challenge by storing PV energy in excess of instantaneous load.

Are batteries a good alternative to net metering?

Many utilities are discontinuing “net metering” policies and assigning much lower value to PV energy exported to the grid. Batteries allow the PV energy to be stored and discharged at a later time to displace a higher retail rate for electricity.
