Introduction

A PSH system stores energy in the form of gravitational potential energy of water, pumped from a lower elevation reservoir to a higher elevation. TES systems are often integrated with electric or absorption chillers to reduce peak electricity costs and, in the case of new construc-tion, to reduce capital costs by optimizing chiller size. Rightsizing equipment improves overall efficiencies for heating or cooling plants, thereby reducing total. Stanford research suggests water facilities could add grid flexibility as grid-scale energy storage technologies.
