Introduction
This article examines how five innovative technologies can transform abandoned or in-use coal mines into sustainable energy centres. Both global coal consumption and production reached record highs in 2024, fueled mainly by the Asia-Pacific region continuing to add coal capacity to its generating fleet. Using a dataset of 2108 coal-fired power plants, this study explores the effects of foreign investment on Asia''s coal. To understand why, developed countries must take a look at the political and market challenges facing the developing world. Coal, the most polluting fossil fuel, supplied 36% of electricity generation in 2022.
