Introduction
Pumped-storage hydroelectricity allows energy from intermittent sources (such as solar, wind, and other renewables) or excess electricity from continuous base-load sources (such as coal or nuclear) to be saved for periods of higher demand. It is a configuration of two water reservoirs at different elevations that can generate power as water moves down from one to the other (discharge), passing through a turbine. What Is Pumped-Storage Hydropower and Its Role in Grid Stability? Pumped-storage hydropower (PSH) is the largest form of grid-scale energy storage. Worldwide there are 820,000 off-river pumped storage sites with 86,000,000 GWh of storage.
