Introduction
The Żarnowiec BESS project, which is backed by a a 17-year contract won in a capacity market auction for 2029, will be located in the vicinity of the Żarnowiec Pumped Storage Power Plant, owned and operated by PGE Group. Polish utility PGE Group is planning to add more than 80 energy storage facilities through to 2035 to the tune of PLN 18 billion ($4. One of these will be the 981 MWh Zarnowiec battery energy storage project, which will be supplied with locally produced LG Energy Solution’s grid-scale. With coal still generating 68% of electricity as of 2024 [1], the country faces mounting pressure to meet EU climate targets while ensuring grid stability. Based on an average power consumption of a 4-person household of 4000 kWh per year and a location in Southern Germany, the solar container can supply approx. Poland’s solar PV sector has faced significant grid strain in spring 2025 as rapid capacity growth exceeded system flexibility. In the coming years, the role of solar power, onshore wind, and offshore wind is expected to grow rapidly.
